Another new product from Essence to hit SA shores is the 2 in 1 Lipstick & Liner. These look exactly like the kajal eyeliner from the brand. I was interested to see how they compared to the new Matt Matt Matt Longlasting Lipgloss so I picked up the shade 01 Beauty Statement.
This product is quite simple. I’m not a fan of this packaging because I find that often in my makeup bag the top comes off and ends up messing every where shudders. I thought this would be a roll up product but sadly it isn’t, which means the amount of product you see in the above picture is the amount of product you get.
So this product was meant to be a lip liner and lipstick in one which means no doe-foot applicator. The tip of the product is used to line the lips and the side to fill them in.
When applying this to my lips I have to say that it went on so smooth. No tugging at all like some of Essence older formula pencil lip liners. It feels very comfortable on the lips but unfortunately it is not transfers-proof. On th packaging it says Matte but again, it is more of a semi-matte finish that doesn’t dry down completely and leaves a tiny bit of shine. It’s quite pigmented and doesn’t apply streaky, like the Matt Matt Matt Longlasting Lipgloss. It does have a sweet, chemical like smell that gives me a headache as it doesn’t really go away.. The smell fades a bit after a while but not completely. The wear time is about 2 hours and when the product fades it leaves a very slight pink hue on my lips.
Other than the smell, I like this product much better than the Matt Matt Matt Longlasting Lipgloss BUT, for the tiny amount of product you get with this one it won’t last you very long. If you’re planning on using this a lot then it will probably only last you 2-3 weeks for the most. If however, you already bought this and planning to use it as a lip liner only then I’d say good on you! Because that is what I am using it for and I think this way it should at least last for more than a month. There are 5 shades to choose from and they retail for R54.95 each. Compared to other drugstore brands these are still affordable, but for the amount of product it is a bit pricey. If you wanting to buy it to use only as a lip liner then I’d say rather skip this one and buy the Essence roll up lip liner (or even the newer pencil ones R19.99) as it’s cheaper (R29.99) , doesn’t have a weird smell, lasts longer and it’s comfortable on the lips too. If you’re wanting to buy this because you have dry lips and need something affordable, non streaky , semi-matte yet comfortable on the lips, then this is for you. They are available at Dis-chem , Clicks and selected Red Square stores.
