Colourpop Super Shock Eyeshadow And Highlighter Review

A few weeks ago Beauty And The Blush SAsent me some beautiful Colourpop products to test out. I have tried the super shock eyeshadows in the past but never in these shades and never in the ultra glitter formula so I was really chuffed to give them a go. The set they sent me was part of the Christmas 2017 stocking stuffer collection. There are four eyeshadow trio’s in this collection as well as four matching lip trio’s. The lip products are mini’s, but the eyeshadow trio’s are all full sized

Lip Trio’s:

  1. Nuts & Berries
  2. Sugar & Spice
  3. Milk & Cookies
  4. Strawberries & Cream

Eye Trio’s:

  1. Nuts & Berries
  2. Sugar & Spice
  3. Milk & Cookies
  4. Strawberries & Cream

I received the Nuts & Berries eyeshadow trio and I’m so glad I did because I love the burgundy red pop of color. I also received the highlighter in the shade Off Tropic

Packaging: Colourpop’s Super Shock eyeshadows as well as Super Shock Highlighters comes in a white compact that’s quite bulky and has a screw on transparent lid with the Colurpop name printed on it. The name often fades off really quickly, not only on the eyeshadows and highlighters but all the other products as well. The bottom of the compact has the name and finish of each shade. I don’t think this packaging is very travel friendly because of how bulky it is. Yes, one can always depot but I really wouldn’t suggest doing so. Because of the unique super shock eyeshadow and highlighter formula – which is very cream like – it needs an airtight seal to keep from drying out, hence the screw on lid which must be closed tightly after each use, as recommended on the box. If not closed properly the product will dry out and crumble. It has happened to me before and it is not pretty.

Formula:

The formula of these eyeshadows and highlighters are really, really unique. It is the first of it’s kind I’ve used to date. The texture is extremely soft and mousse like. It actually feels like a full on cream product but dries down to a soft powder finish once applied to the skin. They feel kind of damp to the touch and are so buttery and soft. The shadows do come in a few different finishes but so far (from the shades I’ve tried) I can definitely say the formula stays quite consistent on majority of the shades and finishes, the same goes for the highlighters. As you will see in the images below, the formula of these are so soft that when you swatch or dig your brush into it, it leaves a little “pit” or “hole”. Because of the unique formula, these shadows and highlighters have absolutely no fall-out. The pigmentation is incredible. In fact, I find the darker shades often stains the skin (see pictures below).

The highlighter did break in transit but it’s because of the incredibly soft formula. I just pressed it back and it was fine again.

The shades included in this eyeshadow trio:

Amaze – Ultra Glitter, peachy gold with multi dimensional glitter

Paradox – Satin, warm burgundy red

Cheap Date – Ultra Glitter, true gold with silver glitter

The highlighter is a Pearlized finish in the shade Off Tropic – Pearlized, intense icy taupe

My Experience With The Super Shock Eyeshadows:

I remember my very first time using the Colourpop Super Shock shadows.. I didn’t really know how to apply such a tricky formula at all. The very first shades I owned (Bill and Hanky Panky) translated very light on my skin and I wasn’t a fan. It also looked patchy so I decided I didn’t like the matte and satin Super Shock shadows. A few months later I got the shade Crenshaw and decided to give it another go. I then applied my eye primer and set it with some translucent powder. I gave it a few minutes to “settle” because I didn’t want the primer to move around upon blending the shadows. Using a medium sized tapered blending brush I applied a very thin layer of shadow. It looked so beautiful on the eye as I was building my application. Yes, it does take a while to blend layer upon layer but I find it gives the best result that way. When you apply a layer with your finger and blend it out afterwards it can sometimes look patchy and uneven, especially the darker shades. But hey, if that’s how you like to apply it then keep doing so. After I was satisfied with the amount of color I had on my eye, I applied a black shade just on the outer corner using a small pencil brush. I followed that by going in with my tapered brush again to make it all look seamlessly blended. I used the exact same technique with the burgundy shade in this trio. Colourpop describes this shade as ‘a warm burgundy red’ but on me it was more cool toned. The color was still pretty though, and it looks very similar to the shade Venetian Red in the popular Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette. I did notice that on the outer corner of my eye this shade was a little bit patchy, but after using a clean shading brush just to blend that outer section again it looked much better. I used that same shading brush to apply the Ultra Glitter shade, Amaze. It wasn’t very vibrant when applied with the brush so I just went in with my finger to apply it and blended/“merged” the edges with my shading brush. Boy are these Ultra Glitter eyeshadows something else! They are truly as they are described – ultra glittery.

Around the 5 hour mark I did notice some glitters on my under eye area, but it was very little.

I wore these shadows for around 8 hours and they didn’t fade, transfer or crease. I used Pardadox on my lower lash line as well and it didn’t smudge at all. Another thing I love about this formula is there is absolutely no fallout! Ziltch. Nada.

My Experience With The Super Shock Highlighter:

Where to begin. I absolutely adore these highlighters! I apply them with a damp beauty blender – pressing it onto the skin – and it gives me the most natural lit from within glow. I also used my finger on a few occasions and just blended in a small circular motion and it still looked effortlessly good. If I want my highlight more blinding I use my Real Techniques setting brush and build the application until I am happy with it. The reason why I adore these highlighters is because they don’t emphasize texture or pores at all (at least not in my case.) Some powder highlighters I’ve tried don’t layer well, but these layer effortlessly. It doesn’t feel gritty to the touch nor does it have any chucks on glitter, so it translates beautifully on the skin. A definite winner in my books. Even when you’re not wearing makeup, a tiny bit of this highlighter on your cheeks and some lip gloss will have you looking naturally glowy. These last quite long too, around 7.5 hours. There is a variety of shades available and something for every skin tone.

In the below picture – just to give you an idea of what it looks like on the skin – Sharon from Colourpop HQ is wearing this highlighter in Off Tropic.

The shades in this eyeshadow trio is all sold out on the Colourpop website, as is the highlighter. I completely understand! The formula is very intimidating. I’ve tried the Super Shock bronzers about 2 years ago and they were just awful. Definitely wouldn’t recommend those AT ALL. But the Super Shock eyeshadows are really something. Definitely give them a go and use a tapered blending brush. Also if you don’t use eye primer then definitely first just dab some translucent powder on your lids before going in with these shadows, as they don’t apply well to moist/oily lids.

Thank you for the constant support ❤️ it means a great deal to me ❤️

Yes, me too! I don’t use cream products at all but these are amazing. They don’t feel sticky at all, unlike some other cream products.
