I am so super excited to announce that I am now a part of the Boxycharm gang! After seeing the amazing unboxing’s over at Simone An Ordinary Gal’s blog, I decided to order the April box and see if it would be worth my while.
For those of you who don’t know what Boxycharm is, it’s a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box that retails for $21. You get 5 full sized products from a variation of brands including: PUR Cosmetics, Ofra, Luxie Beauty, Dr Brandt, Tarte, Colourpop, Makeup Geek, Becca, CoverFX, among other (great) brands. Of course these are mid-high end items, so the value of the boxes are often over $100, making $21 a month so worth it.
After reading all of Simone’s unboxing’s I finally caved, and here is what my April box contained. The theme for the April box was Eye Candy I’ve tried everything already so I will give my first impressions on each item.
Tarte Tartiest Pro Glow Liquid Highlighter – Stunner ($29)I had my eye on this highlighter last year but it was retailing for R500 from a third party seller and I didn’t think it was worth it. I got the shade Stunner which I thought would be too light for me but it actually looks really pretty on my medium dark skin. The first thing I noticed is this highlighter is very sparkly. If you’re not into sparkly highlighters this is definitely not for you. It can be sheered out to look less intense though. I wanted to see if it could possibly work mixed in with my foundation but that was a complete fail. I had tiny shimmers/glitters all over my face and ended up removing it, so definitely not a product to mix in with your foundation. On the plus side, the formula is oil free so it feels very light on the skin.I applied it with a brush to the high points of my face but find that it looks way better when applied with my finger or a beauty blender. With a brush it doesn’t “diffuse” into the skin very well and can look patchy. I’m glad I got to try this product in my box because at R500 I definitely don’t think it’s worth it. There are better liquid highlighters out there.
Colourpop My Little Pony Pressed Powder Eyeshadow Palette ($16)Okay, you guys already know I love Colourpop but I was really hoping to get the Golden State Of Mind or Semi Precious palettes. That’s okay though, this palette is very pretty but just not very me. I haven’t used it but I have tried other Colourpop palettes and the quality is great! Definitely worth the price and such a lovely addition to April’ box. To be honest the palette is what made me want this box the most.
Dr Brandt Pores No More Vaccum Cleaner ($47)My very first time trying a Dr Brandt product and I was obviously very excited! The product description reads
“Like its name implies, this treatment sucks out the most packed-in oil and debris with a power blend of ingredients. Salicylic acid helps soak up oil and loosen dirt and impurities, with an assist from oil-controlling oleanolic acid derived from African trees. Glycolic acid exfoliates away dirt and dead skin cells, allowing botanical extracts from iris and eijisu rose to tighten pore walls so pores look smaller.”
Well it sounds great doesn’t it? I couldn’t wait to try it out and after I did the first thing that hit me was the smell. It smells a little bit citrusy but also a bit like medicine? I don’t know how to describe it but it’s definitely peculiar and bothered me a little. The instructions say to apply a thin layer of the product to areas of concern, so I applied it to my nose and the apples of my cheeks. It states to leave the mask on for 5-10 minuets until it dries. It actually dries quite fast. It goes on clear but dries to a white/grey. It does say that a cooling sensation will occur but it straight up burned my face. Not in an unbearable way though. It feels really stiff when it dries but it washes off really easily. My face felt “cool” after rinsing it. You know how your breath feels “cool” after you ate a really strong mint? That’s what my face felt like. It wasn’t uncomfortable or anything and did fade after about 15 minuets. The next day my nose and cheeks felt really lovely! I thought Dr Brandt products were all hype but after using this I could feel a difference to my skin. I really hope to try more of the Dr Brandt products in future.
The Browgal Instatint Tinted Eyebrow Gel 02 ($22) I received the shade 02 in my box and initially I thought it would be way too light, but after using it it’s a pretty good match. There are only 3 shades available and I thought the shade 03 would be best suited for me, but thankfully 02 was a good match. I love how small and thin the spoolie is on this product. It makes filling in your brows mess free and so easy. You do however have to apply multiple coats to your brows as the spoolie doesn’t deposit enough product. I prefer it this way, because building a brow product is always better rather than applying a giant blob on the first application and not being able to salvage it. This product is now in my handbag as I love using it for everyday. It gives me a natural, fluffy brow that still looks defined and neat, you know what I mean? Another great product I will use until I finish it.
Adesse Hi Definition Liquid Lipstick – Kitten Pink ($24)This product is described as being a “Hi Definition Liquid Lipstick” but it’s definitely more of a gloss. The formula is very thick and it does feel a bit tacky on the lips but in a good way. You guys know I’m not a fan of lipgloss but the color of this is just so pretty! It suits my skin color so well and has amazing pigmentationWhen I opened it the first thing I noticed was how full the tube is. The product was practically popping out. It was filled to the brim, no joke. It smells similar to the Kylie liquid lipsticks, very vanilla and sweet. It’s comfortable on the lips but it transfers quite a bit, which is rather annoying.
So that’s it! The items from my April Boxycharm. The total value of this box is $138. Now I know I’m not crazy about everything but I had so much fun trying out these brands and these products. To me, this box was definitely worth it. I bought it from Fashion Police for R600, but Paula was already booked out of May boxes so I decided to sign up myself using Aramax Global Shopper. A huge thank you to Simone from An Ordinary Gal blog for helping me and answering all of my (dumb) questions.
So with the box being $21 and Aramex charging R199 for shipping, my May box will be around R450. This month only, Boxycharm will have 6 products included in each box, instead of just 5. It is their birthday month so they are making the boxes extra special. So far from the sneak peaks each May Boxycharm box will include:
That already brings the value of the box to over $135! I’m not sure what the last 2 items will be but I cannot wait to find out! If you would like to sign up for Boxycharm, you can use my referral link here. There is currently no waiting list so I would highly suggest signing up now.
