Today’s review is the first of it’s kind on my blog *crowd cheers*. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know I am subscribed to Boxycharm and shared a spoiler that the March 2020 Boxyluxe included a PMD Clean device. Since my Clarisonic Mia was on it’s last legs, I really wanted to upgrade to Boxyluxe to receive the PMD but I was too late. I stumbled across the PMD SA Instagram page and was so excited to see they were available in SA. Shipping and customs from the USA would have been ridiculously expensive for this item.
PMD just launched at Beauty Revolution this year and not many people knew they were in SA yet. I requested a price list from them, and their response was very swift. They gifted me the – very pretty pink – PMD Clean device and I was over the moon! Fast forward a few days later and my *PMD Device was delivered. I was excited to put the it to the test.

Product Packaging:
The product comes packaged in a simple cardboard box and includes the device, a transparent stand (so it’s easy to store on your bathroom counter/in the shower) as well as one AA battery, which I was surprised to find included. The product is battery operated and takes 1 AA battery. It’s so nice to be able to use a device like this immediately without having to charge it first. The rose gold portion at the bottom of the product unscrews and that’s where you insert the battery. I know some people prefer a chargeable device, however I don’t mind that this is battery operated. It is less of a hassle for me personally
I’ve never used a silicone cleansing device before so I couldn’t wait to start using this. It’s different to the Clarisonic Mia, as you can use both sides of the device. The device has 4 settings in total. The bristled side is for exfoliating and has 2 settings, while the other side has wave-like grooves and is used as an anti-aging massager which you can also use to apply moisturizer/serum/face creams to your face, using pulsating vibrations- for better absorption. The anti-aging side has 2 pulsing settings to really help “push” the products into the skin.
As per their website tell advise you to wet your face with warm water, rinse device, apply your chosen cleanser onto the device and move brush head in circular motions to cleanse the face using either one of the two settings. I tried this method and I didn’t quite like it. I prefer to wet my face and apply my cleanser directly, then start cleansing in circular motions. I tried both a gel and a foaming cleanser on different occasions and they both work well with this device.
When I used it for the first time I expected it to be harsh because it is quite a powerful vibration, however it is so gentle. It doesn’t feel harsh, or like you’re scrubbing a layer of your skin off. On the device there’s a section of bristles that’s longer, making it perfect to cleanse more problematic areas. There are two settings for cleansing but I do prefer setting one as it’s slower and more gentle. Setting two is gentle as well but it is faster, so I only tend to use it around stubborn areas like my nose, chin and jawline. For the rest of my face setting one works perfectly and because it’s not as fast I do have more control when using it. Even though there’s no recommend time to use it, I use it for 1-3 minutes max as the vibrations can make your hand feel numb.
Rinsing my face after the very first use my cheek area was a little pink. I think it might have been the vibration. It wasn’t red/inflamed at all, just slightly pink. It did however fade away relatively quick. I also noticed that my skin felt a little tight after the first use. Not painful or anything just kind of, firm? I went ahead and applied my skincare and after about 30 minutes the “stiff” feeling was only in the centre of my face and went away eventually. I think it might have been because I really went in on my nose, as I have quite a bit of pores and really wanted to do a deep clean. The wand of the device is flexible so I can add pressure to the cleansing head if I want or hold it lower on the handle for less pressure. Same as with an eyeshadow blending brush – more pressure equals more color deposit and less pressure equals lighter color that’s more diffused, and it also offers you more control. I think I might have used too much pressure around my nose the first time around. Still, my skin wasn’t hurting or feeling stripped. I’m happy to report that after using the device for the second time the firm/tight feeling was almost non existent. I think my skin just needed to get used to it.
I used the back of the product to massage my moisturizer and serum into my skin. The same with cleansing, I prefer to apply the products directly onto my skin – not rubbing it in – then using the device over it to help the products absorb. I used the device in upward motions whilst massaging and not applying much pressure to the device head so it could be as gentle as possible and not cause any pulling on my skin. It feels amazing and is so relaxing but I did run into some trouble on my forehead. The device flexibility is restricted where the forehead is concerned. It knocks your forehead a bit and can be uncomfortable. I played around with it, holding it different ways and at different angles and found that if I apply slight pressure and hold it sideways, it does the trick. The device glides well over a face oil and overall feels relaxing. It also stimulates blood flow, promotes lymphatic drainage as well as increases collagen production, which helps with anti-aging and skin elasticity. This enables skincare products to absorb into the skin much better. Thus maximizing skincare benefits.
Do bare in mind that the skin around your eyes is extra delicate, so I wouldn’t recommend using this product around the eye area. I just pat my eye creams in gently with my finger.
If you’ve never used a cleansing device before it might feel strange at first. Keep in mind that your skin can purge, meaning all the breakouts you have in the underlying layers of your skin or any gunk/dirt can come up to the surface when you’re using a cleansing device. It happened to me when I started new products for my eczema as well. Before it got better it all came to surface. It is normal, though not everyone experiences it. Remember that different products works differently for everyone. Once everything is on the surface and you continue using your products, it will eventually clear up. I’m not sure if this product can be used on an active breakout – not the small kind, the big, inflamed kind. It doesn’t say on the website but the owner of PMD SA said, “it can be used on big acne but just use less pressure. Often in 3 weeks people notice a big reduction of acne and skin texture will be smoother as well”.
I’m definitely going to try it on my hormonal breakouts and update you guys on my Instagram. Make sure to give me a follow here.
If you can afford it I would definitely recommend investing in one of these. I know it costs a pretty penny, but because you don’t need to replace brush heads you’ll save in the long run. I definitely see and feel a difference in my skin since using this device. My pores feel like they’ve been deep cleaned and my skin feels quite plump. I’m very excited to see how my skin will progress in the next 2-3 months. It’s travel friendly, however I do wish it came with a little travel case. They do have travel cases coming soon but in the meantime I’ll improvise and store it in a canvas/makeup bag for travel.
The device retails for R1980 from PMD SA here. They have other products in their range as well, this one being the entry level option. If you guys have any questions or concerns regarding this product or any of their other products, the PMD SA team is extremely helpful. You can pop them a message on Instagram here email them here.

Oh I love packing of this product. How fancy it looks, I’m in love. Been trying to find perfect face brush for ages, I might give this one a go though. Lovely review. xx
You totally should! Its much better than using the manual facial cleansing brushes as those can sometimes cause micro abrasions to the skin, which of course isn’t great. Not sure if this brand is available in your country but you should definitely look it up. It’s an investment for sure but one I feel is worth it in the long run. Thanks for stopping by Azra. Xx
I’ve used mine a couple times, and will continue to use it until my clarisonic arrives, but I have to admit I definitely prefer the clarisonic to the PMD.
I definitely think Clarisonic is in a league of it’s own and you can’t compare the two since they’re made differently. But I am super happy with how the PMD has been working for me, especially since getting the latest Clarisonic (my one was the old Mia) is out of my price range right now, can you imagine customs! The Mia Smart looks amazing though.
So glad you are liking your PMD as well. Do you have this one or the pro?
Loving the pink on this and the packaging looks so cute as well. Thanks for this write-up, am genuinely thinking of getting one for myself!
It really is so pretty! Have you seen the Tiffany blue color? It’s gorgeous! I hope you do manage to get one. It really cleanses the skin so nicely. Thank you for stopping by
